Profile
Morgenhof Wine Estate Stellenbosch is one of the Cape Winelands’ most historically significant and comprehensively equipped wine estates — a breathtaking property on the Klapmuts Road (R44) at the foot of the Simonsberg Mountains, dating back to 1692, owned by Anne Cointreau (of the French Cointreau liqueur family), spanning 213 hectares of which 78 are under vine, producing approximately 40,000 cases of award-winning wine per year under winemaker Andries de Klerk (rated among the best winemasters in the world). The estate offers a world-class wedding and conference venue accommodating 20 to 800 guests, a recently renovated boutique hotel, the sophisticated 1692 Restaurant, a tasting room open seven days a week, a wine shop selling estate wines at cellar door prices, a quad bike trail through the estate, monthly pop-up markets, and an extraordinary helicopter elopement package whisking couples from the V&A Waterfront directly to the estate for an intimate ceremony in the vineyards. Located approximately 40 minutes from Cape Town CBD and 10 minutes from central Stellenbosch, Morgenhof is one of the most complete luxury day-trip and event destinations in the Winelands.
1692: Heritage and Three Centuries of Winemaking
Morgenhof’s history is one of the longest of any estate still producing wine in the Cape. The property dates to 1692 — four years after the Cape of Good Hope’s first wine was made at Groot Constantia — placing it among the original generation of wine farms established by the Dutch East India Company’s (VOC) settlers in the fertile Simonsberg foothills. The estate was granted official “Estate” status at the end of 1998, formalising its commitment to estate-grown wines.
The estate’s current ownership by the Cointreau family brought a French perspective that deepened Morgenhof’s already-strong European wine heritage. Under winemaker Andries de Klerk, the estate continues to produce wines that express the distinctive Simonsberg terroir — with a dry-land farming approach that sacrifices volume for concentration of flavour, and altitudes ranging from 65m to 410m above sea level providing diverse soil types (predominantly granite derivatives — Tukulu and Glenrosa) and microclimatic conditions that give the wines their “iconic, true to terroir” character.
The estate name itself — “Morgenhof” — is Dutch for “Morning Farm” (morning courtyard), a name that captures the quality of the early Simonsberg light that falls across the vineyards each day.
The 1692 Restaurant: Casual Sophistication
1692 is Morgenhof’s on-site restaurant — a “casual yet sophisticated” eatery whose name honours the estate’s founding year. The menu features dishes “perfectly crafted to suit the award-winning wines” from the cellar, with a focus on estate produce and Winelands cuisine. A Tripadvisor reviewer who visits annually on their wedding anniversary described returning specifically “to soak in the beauty and enjoy the amazing food.” The restaurant’s menu extends to contemporary options including pizza alongside more formal dining.
Morgenhof is in the process of opening additional restaurant formats to further expand the on-site dining offering — from pizza to fine dining — reflecting an ongoing investment in the estate’s hospitality programme.
Wine Tasting and the Wine Shop
The tasting room is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00 (Mondays also 09:00–17:00), with the tasting room closing 30 minutes before end of trade. Wine tastings and cellar tours are available seven days a week. The on-site wine shop sells Morgenhof wines at cellar door prices — a practical reason for visitors to buy before they return to Cape Town, where retail margins are significantly higher.
The estate’s award-winning wines are produced across a range that includes reds, whites, and rosés — with the Simonsberg granite soils providing excellent conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay, among others.
Weddings: 20 to 800 Guests and a Helicopter Elopement Package
Morgenhof’s wedding programme covers the full spectrum of modern wedding formats — from the most intimate to the genuinely grand:
Intimate to Large Weddings (20 to 800 guests) — the estate’s portfolio of versatile venues provides “the canvas upon which your love story unfolds,” with configurations from private 20-person dinners to 800-guest receptions. The estate’s 1692 heritage architecture, vineyard landscapes, and mountain backdrop create a setting of genuine historic grandeur that few Winelands estates can match at this scale.
The Helicopter Elopement Package — one of the most distinctive wedding offerings in South Africa: a private helicopter departs from the iconic V&A Waterfront and whisks the couple to Morgenhof, where they exchange vows amid the vineyards and Simonsberg landscape before enjoying a private lunch with estate wines. This package is designed for couples who want the beauty and romance of a Winelands ceremony without the complexity of a large event.
A Tripadvisor wedding guest described the experience of his own wedding there as “simply stunning — the staff provided all we needed and with a smile. We return yearly on our anniversary — just to soak in the beauty and enjoy the amazing food.” He added: “My view may be biased as I was stunned by the beauty of the venue — but this was overshadowed by the beauty of my bride.”
Boutique Hotel Accommodation
Morgenhof’s recently renovated boutique hotel provides on-site luxury accommodation for wedding parties, conference delegates, wine-focused getaway guests, and couples celebrating anniversaries. The renovation reflects the estate’s ongoing investment in the quality of the overnight experience, ensuring that every element of a multi-day visit matches the estate’s world-class wine and event infrastructure.
Quad Bike Trails
One of Morgenhof’s most distinctive non-wine activities is its quad bike trail — described as “easy to moderate” and conducted with a tour guide ensuring safety throughout. The trail provides an adventure-focused way to experience the estate’s 213-hectare landscape, offering views of the vineyards, the mountain slopes, and the broader Simonsberg area that no vehicle tour can replicate. The quad bike trail is bookable as part of a Winelands day trip and pairs naturally with wine tasting and lunch at 1692.
Monthly Pop-Up Markets and Trail Runs
Morgenhof also hosts regular community events on its grounds: monthly pop-up markets drawing traders and visitors from across the Winelands, and trail runs through the estate’s extensive property. These events reflect the estate’s positioning as a living, breathing community destination rather than purely a wedding and corporate venue.
