Profile
Featherbed Co Knysna is the Garden Route’s most celebrated eco-experience operator — a locally owned company that has been giving visitors to Knysna and the Western Cape an unforgettable encounter with one of South Africa’s most remarkable natural environments since the early 1990s. From the ferry departure point at Cruise Café on Remembrance Drive, the Featherbed Co’s flagship four-hour Eco Experience departs daily to the privately-owned 150-hectare Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Head of Knysna — a South African Natural Heritage Site accessible only by water — combining a lagoon ferry crossing, a 4×4 headland drive with panoramic views, a specialist-guided 2.2 km nature walk through coastal forest, fynbos, and ancient Khoi-Khoi sea caves, and a world-renowned buffet lunch served under a canopy of Milkwood trees at the outdoor Food Forest Restaurant. The same organisation also operates a fleet of iconic vessels — including the famous John Benn, the one-of-a-kind Paddle Cruiser, and the Rivercat ferry — and hosts private functions, weddings, and conferences across its multiple venues both on land and on the water. TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice 2025 award winner.
Knysna’s Natural Heritage: The Featherbed Nature Reserve
The Featherbed Nature Reserve is not simply a scenic attraction — it is a 150-hectare privately-owned nature reserve that constitutes the entire Western Head of Knysna, one of the most ecologically significant pieces of coastal landscape in the country. Access is controlled: the only way onto the reserve is by ferry from the Knysna Waterfront, a deliberate measure to protect the splendour of the natural environment and ensure a quality experience for every visitor.
The reserve is home to two of the Garden Route’s most iconic species: the Knysna Loerie (the vividly coloured bird that has become synonymous with Knysna) and the Blue Duiker, one of Africa’s smallest antelope. Wildlife on the reserve also includes Cape Mountain Tortoises, Blue Cranes (South Africa’s national bird), the rare Black African Oyster Catcher (listed on the endangered Red Data List), White-Breasted Cormorants, Bushbuck, and more. The Knysna Lagoon itself — more accurately an estuary — is fed by five fresh-water rivers flowing from the surrounding Outeniqua Mountains, meeting the surge of the Indian Ocean through the grand sandstone cliffs of the Knysna Heads.
The reserve walk passes through Milkwood forests, along the steep sandstone cliffs, into ancient Khoi-Khoi sea caves, and along a scenic coastal path fringed with aromatic fynbos — a 2.2 km route that guide Morris (singled out by multiple guests for his extraordinary knowledge and enthusiasm) turns into something far richer than a walk: a narrated encounter with 10,000 years of human and natural history.
The Featherbed Eco Experience: Four Hours of the Garden Route’s Best
The signature offering is the four-hour Eco Experience with lunch, which departs daily from the Featherbed Ferry Terminus at Cruise Café on Remembrance Drive:
- Return ferry crossing on the Knysna Lagoon to the Western Head
- 4×4 vehicle and trailer drive up the headland to spectacular viewpoints overlooking the lagoon, the Heads, and the Indian Ocean
- Specialist guide providing in-depth information on Knysna’s history, fauna, and flora
- Optional guided 2.2 km nature walk through coastal forest, fynbos, Milkwood forest, and ancient sea caves
- Outdoor buffet lunch in the Food Forest Restaurant under a canopy of Milkwood trees — winner of the 2010 Knysna Oyster Festival’s “Van Loveren Best Restaurant Sensation Award” and the Diners Club “Winelist of the Year Gold Award”
A three-hour version without lunch is also available for guests with time constraints. Both departures operate seven days a week, year-round (closed Christmas Day), subject to weather. A minimum of 10 adult passengers is required for departure. Trips are only cancelled in extreme weather conditions.
Daily schedule:
- 08:30 and 14:30 (3-hour, special request groups)
- 10:00 and 11:30 (4-hour with lunch); 12:30 departs in high season
The John Benn: Knysna’s Most Famous Boat
The John Benn is a Knysna institution — a vessel whose name is as closely associated with the lagoon as the Knysna Heads themselves. The John Benn offers restaurant and bar facilities for luncheon and dinner cruises, and is available for private charters, weddings, conferences, and other functions including product launches. A January 2024 guest described the John Benn experience as “a highlight of our vacation in Knysna — the restaurant on the John Benn serves high-quality food and drinks, the staff are very friendly and welcoming, and booking was easy.”
The Paddle Cruiser
The Featherbed Co’s Paddle Cruiser is a one-of-a-kind vessel on the Knysna Lagoon — the only paddle steamer-style craft operating on the Garden Route. Like the John Benn, it offers restaurant and bar facilities for luncheon and dinner cruises, and is available for private charters. The Paddle Cruiser is particularly popular for sunset cruises, small weddings, and intimate private celebrations where the novelty of the vessel itself becomes part of the event.
The Old Three Legs Rivercat: Shuttle to the Beach Bar
The Rivercat (Old Three Legs) operates as a shuttle service to the Featherbed Beach Bar — a fully licensed bar on the reserve accessible only by water. The Beach Bar is currently closed; guests should check the Featherbed Co’s website or Facebook page for updates on its reopening.
Cruise Café: Waterfront Dining at the Departure Point
Cruise Café at the Featherbed Ferry Terminus on Remembrance Drive is the land-based restaurant that anchors the Featherbed Co’s Knysna Waterfront presence. One UK-based visitor described a Sunday lunch there as follows: gorgeous views, watching boats come in and out, fish and chips next to the water, a bottle of Splattered Toad wine — followed by a return evening visit for steak with herb and lemon butter and amarula crème brûlée. “Great spot, love it!”
Celebrations and Events: Weddings, Functions, and Conferences
All Featherbed Co venues throughout the operation are fully licensed. Private functions, conferences, and weddings can be hosted at any of the venues — including on the boats themselves (the John Benn and Paddle Cruiser both accommodate functions on the lagoon). The reserve’s outdoor settings, the Food Forest Restaurant under the Milkwood canopy, the Cruise Café terrace, and the various on-water event platforms collectively make the Featherbed Co one of the most varied and uniquely positioned event companies on the entire Garden Route.
No outside food or beverages may be brought onto the property. Event enquiries are handled through the central bookings contact.
What Guests Are Saying
Lynette van Schalkwyk, who brought her children and grandchildren visiting from the UK, described the experience as breathtaking from the top, with “compliments to the chef — food tasty and well-presented” and an amazing tour guide. Guide Morris has been singled out by multiple reviewers for turning the nature walk into an exceptional and deeply informative experience. Patric, another team member, is celebrated as the current “chucking champion” on national television — a charming detail about the very human character of this locally owned operation.
