Profile
Leipzig Country House & Winery is one of the Western Cape’s most historically rooted and romantically positioned country house estates — a 200-year-old working wine farm in the picturesque Nuy Valley on Route 62 between Worcester and Robertson, where the 9th generation of the same family continues to farm, produce boutique wines, and welcome guests to one of the most genuinely storied properties in the Breede Valley. With 21 luxury en-suite guest suites, a 3-bedroom self-catering house, three upmarket conference venues, a historic wine cellar seating 130 for weddings and receptions, a century-old brandy cellar converted to a chapel, a tranquil garden with towering oak trees in front of the Manor House, a rolling lawn amphitheatre, an optional Bedouin tent, tractor-wagon vineyard drives, a boutique winery producing award-winning wines including the renowned White Leipzig blend, and a secret tortoise garden — Leipzig Country House is the kind of place that makes guests feel they have discovered something irreplaceable. Located 90 minutes from Cape Town on Route 62, the property was established in 1723 by the first descendant of the family’s lineage from the German city of Leipzig, and today operates under the motto that brings everything together: “Where timeless traditions meet modern living.”
300 Years of History: From Leipzig, Germany to the Nuy Valley
The farm’s founding story is one of the most distinctive in the Cape Winelands. In 1723, the family’s first South African descendant — a settler who came from the German city of Leipzig — arrived in the Cape Colony and eventually settled in the Nuy Valley, beginning the farming legacy that nine generations have continued ever since. The family is 9th generation descendants of Johannes Christiaan, and their passion for the history of the farm, for hospitality, and for making exceptional boutique wines is the living thread connecting three centuries of stewardship to the contemporary guest experience.
The farm’s buildings reflect this history directly: the Manor House dates from the earliest settlement period; the wine cellar that now serves as the primary wedding reception venue is historic; and the chapel — a century-old brandy cellar converted for ceremonies — carries the same weight of time and story that the surrounding mountains carry.
The Wedding Venues: Cellar, Chapel, Garden, Amphitheatre, and Bedouin Tent
Leipzig Country House offers five distinct wedding settings within the same estate — a combination that gives couples extraordinary flexibility and allows the wedding day to flow through multiple spaces as the celebration evolves:
The Historic Wine Cellar — the estate’s flagship wedding reception space, seating up to 130 guests with a separate dance floor. This is where the farm’s centuries of winemaking heritage become the wedding backdrop — a space that carries the character and texture of genuine agricultural history, dressed for celebration.
The Chapel (Century-Old Brandy Cellar) — the original brandy distillation cellar has been converted into an intimate, characterful chapel accommodating 80 guests. A ceremony in this space is unlike any other in the Breede Valley — the thick stone walls, the low ceiling, and the accumulated history create a ceremony atmosphere that couples describe as deeply moving.
The Manor House Garden — an outdoor ceremony setting under the towering oak trees in front of the old Manor House, where the combination of centuries-old trees, the farmhouse architecture, and the mountain backdrop transforms the wedding into a fairy-tale. Described as providing an “endless vistas, surrounding vineyards, and rural charm” backdrop for photography.
The Amphitheatre — rolling lawns in an open, natural theatre configuration that provides a generous outdoor space for larger ceremonies, pre-drinks, and informal gatherings that the more intimate venues cannot accommodate.
The Bedouin Tent — available for cocktails and canapés before a formal reception, or for a champagne breakfast the morning after the wedding — one of Leipzig’s most distinctive and romantic touches.
Pre-Wedding and Post-Wedding Experiences
Leipzig’s event team enables the wedding celebration to become a multi-day experience:
- Braai on the night before the wedding, combined with a sundowner tractor-wagon drive through the vineyards — “the ultimate experience” for the wedding party and early-arriving guests
- Champagne breakfast in the garden under the Bedouin tent the morning after
These extensions transform a single wedding day into a full weekend getaway for the couple and their guests — a format that the 21 on-site guest rooms and self-catering house make entirely logistically viable.
Accommodation: 21 Luxury Suites and a Self-Catering House
Leipzig offers 17 to 21 luxury en-suite guest suites (sources vary slightly due to updates) and a 3-bedroom self-catering house for groups requiring independent facilities. All rooms are 4-star rated and positioned to look out over the vineyards, mountains, and gardens. Each suite includes air-conditioning, heating, a writing desk, Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, a double bed with cotton linen, and en-suite bathroom. Tea and coffee facilities and a pool view are available in most rooms.
One reviewer summarised the experience: “The chef prepared lovely food which matched well with the wines. The bonus is that you get to walk to your room. The staff was very friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend this if you are looking for a nice relaxed time.”
The Boutique Winery: White Leipzig and Award-Winning Wines
Leipzig’s boutique winery produces a range of award-winning wines, with the White Leipzig blend specifically noted as the estate’s flagship. Wine tastings and cellar tours are offered — a private tasting in the new boutique wine cellar, guided by knowledgeable staff, provides the context for understanding how the Nuy Valley terroir shapes the estate’s distinctive style.
Conference Venues: Three Spaces for up to 120 Delegates
Leipzig offers three upmarket conference venues accommodating small teams of 10 to larger groups of up to 120 delegates. Each venue is equipped with multimedia audio-visual equipment, DVD and CD players, television, flipcharts, and whiteboards. A private lounge and patio serves as a breakaway space for smaller executive meetings within the larger conference programme.
Activities: Mountain Biking, Hiking, and a Secret Tortoise Garden
Beyond wine and events, Leipzig’s Nuy Valley setting enables a range of outdoor activities:
- Mountain biking
- Hiking in the surrounding mountain terrain
- The secret tortoise garden — one of the estate’s most charming and distinctive features, a quiet corner of the property that provides an unexpected encounter with the Cape’s endemic tortoise population
