Profile
De Charmoy Estate Verulam is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most warmly regarded and comprehensively equipped family-run estate destinations — a 4-star guesthouse, wedding venue, conference centre, and café nestled in the heart of the sugar cane fields of Canelands, Barrs Flats, just 5 kilometres from King Shaka International Airport and 15 kilometres from Gateway Shopping Mall. Established in 1999 by Bernard and Cathy De Charmoy, and now owned and managed by their youngest child Lauren (De Charmoy) Machanick who took over in 2013, the estate is rated 4.4 on Google across 311 reviews (“Very good”) and described as “a home away from home — a destination where you can relax in a tranquil, tropical atmosphere where excellent service and quality are assured.” The estate offers three distinct event venues (the Boma, the Pavilion, and the Hilltop House & Gardens), a guesthouse sleeping up to 40 guests with two outdoor pools, a spa with jacuzzi and sauna, Africa’s first Chocolate Garden café, and full exclusive-use wedding hire with access to all three venues simultaneously.
The Family Story: 25 Years in the Sugar Cane Fields
The De Charmoy Estate story begins with a founding vision of creating something genuinely personal in a setting of natural KwaZulu-Natal beauty. Bernard and Cathy De Charmoy chose Canelands — a quiet agricultural area surrounded by sugar cane fields just north of Durban — as the setting for an estate that would be a genuine “home away from home” for travellers and event guests. Over 25 years, the estate has grown from a guesthouse into a complete hospitality destination, with Lauren’s stewardship since 2013 bringing new energy to the venue, the café, and the events programme.
The Africa Biz review archive captures the estate’s character precisely: one guest who stopped in to deliver a wedding cake described it as “an absolutely breathtaking venue — staff are friendly, a very scenic and family-friendly environment.” Another reviewer described it as “a truly awesome experience, a home away from home — the place is breathtaking, peaceful and your hospitality is commendable — we will definitely be back.” A well-travelled guest who had just returned from Rome described it as “heaven” after four hectic days abroad: “Delightful staff, tranquil setting and lovely rooms.”
Three Venues: Boma, Pavilion, and Hilltop House & Gardens
De Charmoy Estate’s three venues give it a versatility that allows intimate and grand celebrations to coexist on the same property — and for wedding couples who book exclusively, all three are available simultaneously:
The Boma — the estate’s most characterful and rustic venue: an exquisite covered-but-not-enclosed structure with beautifully decked timber floors, chandeliers, a bar area, and a fireplace, seating up to 100 guests. The Boma’s combination of open-air character and warm indoor finishes makes it the ideal setting for intimate weddings, birthday dinners, and year-end functions where the fireplace and chandeliers create exactly the right evening atmosphere.
The Pavilion — the estate’s largest venue, accommodating up to 210–250 guests for large celebrations, corporate galas, and major weddings. The Pavilion provides the scale that the Boma cannot while retaining the De Charmoy character of gardens, natural surroundings, and personal service.
Hilltop House & Gardens — a garden ceremony and celebration setting with panoramic views across the rolling KwaZulu-Natal hills and the sugar cane landscape, ideal for outdoor ceremonies, cocktail receptions, and photography sessions that make the most of the estate’s elevated position and subtropical gardens.
Together, the three venues create a complete wedding-day flow: ceremony in the Hilltop gardens, cocktails in the Boma, and reception in the Pavilion — or any combination that the couple’s vision requires.
Guesthouse Accommodation: 4-Star Rooms and Self-Catering Suites
De Charmoy Estate’s guesthouse provides accommodation for up to 40 overnight guests across a range of room types, with a total of 23 units according to LekkeSlaap. Rates start from R1,750 per night for two guests. All rooms and suites are set within the subtropical garden environment of the estate.
Room types include standard guesthouse rooms and suites, with the residential property adjacent to the commercial estate featuring two large houses (a 4-bedroom main house and a 5-bedroom secondary house), staff quarters, and a separate 2-bedroom flatlet. Two outdoor pools serve the accommodation guests, and the jacuzzi and sauna at 8 Robert Armstrong Road (across the estate) are available for relaxation.
Check-in from 14:00–18:00; check-out by 11:00.
The Chocolate Garden: Africa’s First Chocolate-Inspired Café
One of De Charmoy Estate’s most distinctive and celebrated features is The Chocolate Garden — described as Africa’s first chocolate-inspired garden, featuring plants with chocolate-coloured leaves and scents, adjoined by a coffee shop that serves chocolate-infused meals. The Chocolate Garden has become an attraction in its own right — a destination for Durban North residents, travellers stopping over near King Shaka Airport, and couples visiting the estate for a wedding viewing. It is the venue’s most public-facing offering, and its whimsical, sensory character is central to the estate’s brand identity.
The Spa: Jacuzzi, Sauna, and Mobile Services
The estate’s spa facilities include a jacuzzi and sauna and full beauty and wellness treatments. Mobile spa services are available within a 20 km radius of the estate, making in-room treatments at Durban North hotels and guesthouses possible for guests who cannot travel to the estate. The spa is positioned for couples and honeymooners as well as conference groups who want a wellness component to their residential stay.
Small Animal Enclosure
A small animal enclosure on the estate provides a nature and wildlife dimension that younger guests and families particularly enjoy — reviewers specifically mention it as a highlight for families with children.
Conferences and Events
The three-venue structure and the guesthouse accommodation make De Charmoy a natural residential conference destination for corporate groups from Durban and KwaZulu-Natal. The estate allows external caterers for weddings and events after a vetting process, giving clients creative freedom in their menu design. Three fully equipped kitchens, a welcoming reception area, a generator for uninterrupted service, and four separate vehicle entrances support the full event infrastructure.
