Profile
Chartwell Castle Johannesburg is one of Gauteng’s most extraordinary event and hospitality destinations — a genuine four-storied castle on 5 hectares (12 acres) of lush grounds in tranquil Chartwell West, where late 17th-century Baroque-inspired architecture, Baroque spires and towers, and a hedgerow maze that is the largest known uninterrupted maze in the Southern Hemisphere and the third largest in the world combine to create a venue that feels like it has arrived directly from a fairytale. Situated on the banks of the Klein Jukskei River, approximately 30 minutes from the Johannesburg city centre and just 5 minutes from Fourways, Chartwell Castle accommodates up to 40 guests overnight across castle suites and riverside bush cottages, operates a fully licensed restaurant and bar, hosts weddings, corporate conferences, team-building events, and family day outings, and earns a 4.3 Google rating across 391 reviews — making it one of the highest-rated castle accommodation and event venues in South Africa.
The Castle: Four Storeys of Late 17th-Century Architecture
The main building at Chartwell Castle is the defining element of the entire property. Built in the style of late 17th-century Baroque architecture — the same era that produced the great chateaux of France and the stately homes of England — the four-storey structure features the turrets, spires, towers, and ornate stonework that unmistakably signal a castle. Joburg.co.za describes the first impression: “You’ll feel as if you’ve journeyed into another world as you enter the grounds — the Baroque-inspired spires and towers look like they’ve come straight out of a movie.”
The castle’s interior matches the exterior grandeur. Five spacious suites are housed within the main building, each with a private en-suite bathroom, underfloor heating, DStv, free Wi-Fi, and traditional country décor in characterful, individually styled rooms. Two of the five suites have private balconies. The castle’s communal areas include an indoor fireplace — the perfect gathering point on Highveld winter evenings — as well as braai facilities, a large garden, and a swimming pool.
The Hedge Maze: A World Record on Your Doorstep
Chartwell Castle’s most genuinely remarkable feature — one that has no parallel at any other event venue in South Africa — is its hedgerow maze. At approximately 6,000 m² (1.5 acres) and comprising more than 900 conifer trees, it is the largest known uninterrupted hedgerow maze in the Southern Hemisphere, and the third largest in the world. To put that in perspective: the famous Hampton Court Maze in London — arguably the world’s most famous hedge maze — is approximately five times smaller than Chartwell Castle’s labyrinth.
Maze entry is available for day visitors and event guests alike, and it has become one of the most popular standalone activities for families, team-building groups, and wedding parties seeking something uniquely memorable. Couples have the option of having their wedding ceremony inside the maze itself — an option so distinctive it appears on no other wedding venue’s list of offerings in the region.
Accommodation: Castle Suites and Klein Jukskei Bush Cottages
Chartwell Castle accommodates a total of 40 guests sharing across two distinct settings:
The Castle Suites (13 guests) — five en-suite suites within the main four-storey castle building, each with underfloor heating, DStv, free Wi-Fi, and country-style décor. Two suites have balconies. Breakfast is served in the lush gardens between 07:00 and 09:00 (or earlier on request). Guests are rated 10/10 on Booking.com for recent stays; one guest described the breakfast as “excellent — cereal, bacon and eggs, nice coffee.”
The Bush Cottages (27 guests) — six charming cottages situated on the banks of the Klein Jukskei River, described as “ultra-private” and positioned in a riverside cluster that maximises the natural setting. Two further cottages in the gatehouse accommodate additional guests. Together the cottages sleep up to 27 guests in a bushveld riverside atmosphere that is a world away from the city, even though Fourways is minutes away.
No bachelor or bachelorette parties are accommodated at the property. All other group types are welcome. Airport shuttle service is available for a fee (Lanseria International Airport is approximately 10 km away).
Weddings: Garden, Maze, or Hall
Chartwell Castle offers three distinct wedding ceremony formats — a choice available at almost no other Johannesburg venue:
Garden Wedding — ceremonies set within the manicured castle grounds, surrounded by established gardens, water features, and the castle’s architectural backdrop. Ideal for outdoor ceremonies in good weather.
Maze Wedding — a ceremony held inside the hedgerow maze itself, one of South Africa’s most unusual and memorable wedding ceremony settings. The 900-conifer maze provides a natural green “cathedral” for couples who want complete originality.
Hall Wedding — the indoor function hall accommodates approximately 160 seated guests, providing a more traditional formal ceremony and reception space within the castle’s event infrastructure.
All wedding packages are coordinated with an in-house caterer who handles menus, décor arrangements, and function logistics. The venue also caters for birthday parties (all ages), hen’s parties, year-end functions, and team-building events.
Restaurant and Bar: The Vineyards Beer Garden and Pizzeria
Chartwell Castle’s food and beverage offering includes the Vineyards Beer Garden and Pizzeria — an al fresco dining space on the terrace, decorated with fairy lights and offering wood-fired pizzas and craft beers in a romantic outdoor setting that Joburg.co.za describes as “perfect for a date night that’ll score you some major brownie points.” The restaurant operates as a family venue as well as an event catering resource, and serves the broader day-visitor market alongside overnight guests. A full food menu and drinks menu are available through the website.
Family Day Outings and Children’s Activities
Beyond weddings and conferences, Chartwell Castle is a well-established family day-out destination. The maze is the primary draw for family groups, but the property also includes a kiddies’ play area with castle-themed bouncy houses, rocket-shaped inflatables, and a mini train track — keeping younger children entertained while adults explore the grounds, dine at the restaurant, or simply unwind in the garden. The swimming pool is available to overnight guests for cooling off. Seasonal events including an Easter Market (entrance R20 adults / R10 children) with egg hunts, music, food, and family activities are held on the grounds.
