Profile
Sweet Tea and Chickadee Krugersdorp is one of Gauteng’s most distinctive and characterful farm-based event and bakery destinations — a passion project rooted in Southern American hospitality and South African heart, now based at Chickadee Acres, a beautiful farm at 74 Michael Road, Oaktree, in the Cradle of Humankind area near Krugersdorp. With a 98% Facebook recommendation across 25 reviews and a following built over more than a decade in the hospitality industry, Sweet Tea and Chickadee combines a growing programme of cooking classes, private events, corporate functions, and farm-fresh baked goods and produce with the ethos that has always driven the brand: “from our farm to your table.” The venture began as a beloved bakery café in Linden, Johannesburg — and when owner Leah relocated operations to the farm in mid-2024, she brought with her both the recipes and the spirit of what had made Sweet Tea and Chickadee a community institution: food made with skill, warmth, and genuine care.
From Linden to the Cradle: The Story of Chickadee Acres
Sweet Tea and Chickadee’s origin story is as warm as the food. Leah ran a successful bakery and café in Linden for eleven years — a beloved neighbourhood spot known for its Southern American-inspired baking, its hospitality ethos rooted in Cederberg Tea House (her earlier restaurant in America), and its ability to make customers feel genuinely looked after. In June 2024, she made the decision to close the Linden café and move operations full-time to the farm in Oaktree. The transition was not driven by business necessity — it was a gut decision, the kind that people who have spent their careers in hospitality sometimes make when they feel the next chapter pulling them in a new direction.
The plan was ambitious: build out the farm kitchen, plant vegetables and herbs for organic produce, tend the honey hives, and launch cooking classes and events by November 2024. The timeline extended — as farm projects often do — but by 2025 the operation was rolling: baked goods deliveries via WhatsApp catalogue, a Friday drop-off catalog of freshly baked goods, seasonal offerings, and events programming that brings the Sweet Tea and Chickadee community to the farm.
The Food: Southern American Charm Meets South African Soul
The Sweet Tea and Chickadee menu bridges two food cultures in exactly the way that Leah’s background — growing up in and around American Southern cooking, then building a career in South Africa — would suggest. The baked goods catalogue draws on both:
South African specialties — dishes that Leah specifically describes as never having appeared in her café before, now being perfected for the farm:
- Milktart — the classic, beloved South African dessert with its creamy cinnamon-dusted custard filling
- Sausage rolls — golden pastry with perfectly seasoned filling
- Malva pudding — the sticky, caramelised South African sponge that is comfort food at its most essential
Southern American classics — the recipes from Cederberg Tea House that made Leah’s café reputation:
- Apple pie — described with obvious pride: “You can pick it up with one hand and there is not a raisin in sight. Order them frozen and our baking directions will ensure a fresh out of the oven pie in less than 30 minutes.” The apple pie has become a signature, with social media videos of the hand-held slice generating enthusiastic responses from the community.
- Classic American baked goods that carry the warmth of Southern American home cooking
Farm-fresh organic produce — as the Chickadee Acres vegetable garden develops, seasonal organic produce becomes available through the delivery catalogue.
Raw honey — from the hives on the farm, available directly to customers.
All products are available for collection via a Friday drop-off catalogue accessible through WhatsApp or the website — a practical, community-oriented distribution model that keeps the food fresh and the operation personal.
Events and Cooking Classes
The events and cooking classes dimension of Chickadee Acres is the newer layer of the operation, built specifically around the farm setting that the Linden café never had. The programme includes:
Cooking classes — both in-person on the farm and online, covering the baking and cooking techniques that Sweet Tea and Chickadee has refined over years of professional hospitality. Classes range from beginner bread-making to more advanced baking and cooking sessions, all in the character of a farm kitchen where the instruction is personal and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Private events — the farm setting at Oaktree, near the Cradle of Humankind, provides a distinctive countryside backdrop for small private events. The combination of the farm environment, the Sweet Tea and Chickadee kitchen, and Leah’s hospitality background makes Chickadee Acres a compelling option for intimate gatherings, birthday celebrations, and private dining experiences.
Corporate events — the Sweet Tea and Chickadee brand was originally described as a “vintage caravan bakeshop and bar fuelled by Southern American charm and hospitality” that serves “at weddings, corporate events, markets, festivals, and private events” — and this broader events capability continues to define the brand’s market reach.
The Setting: Oaktree and the Cradle of Humankind
The Oaktree area where Chickadee Acres is situated is part of the broader West Rand countryside corridor that includes Muldersdrift, Hekpoort, and the Cradle of Humankind — one of South Africa’s most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The farm’s position in this landscape gives it access to the same audience that makes Muldersdrift’s farm venues and country restaurants so popular: Johannesburg and West Rand families and groups looking for a countryside escape without a long drive.
