Profile
Pure Joy Guest Lodge Roodeplaat Pretoria is one of Gauteng’s most distinctive 4-star bush lodge and conference destinations — a TGCSA-accredited property at 205 Maroela Weg in Roodeplaat, just 15 minutes from the Pretoria CBD and minutes from all major highways, where the splendour of the African bush, centuries-old Maroela trees, free-roaming game including Springbok, Duiker, and Steenbuck, majestic Blue Crane birds, Peacocks, Guinea Fowl, Emus, and a world-class waterfowl collection combine with 65 en-suite lodge rooms, a traditional boma for 80 guests, a modern lapa for 50 guests, a swimming pool, and conference facilities for up to 200 delegates to create one of the most complete and genuinely immersive bush lodge experiences available within the Pretoria metropolitan area. SATour and TGCSA accredited, Pure Joy has established itself over many years as one of Gauteng’s few exclusive lodge and conference venues — a property where the African bush is not a decorative theme but the literal, living environment that surrounds every room, every meeting, and every outdoor celebration.
The Setting: African Bush Inside Greater Pretoria
The defining quality of Pure Joy Guest Lodge is its setting. Despite being only 15 minutes from Pretoria CBD and a short drive from major highways including the N4, N1, and N14, the lodge occupies a stretch of natural African bushveld on Maroela Weg in Roodeplaat — a semi-rural area north-east of Pretoria where the suburban city gives way to open land, indigenous trees, and the kind of birdlife and small game that most South Africans travel hours into the Lowveld to encounter.
The Blue Crane — South Africa’s national bird, and one of the country’s most graceful large birds — wanders freely on the property alongside Springbok, Duiker, and Steenbuck. A world-class waterfowl collection from around the world adds an exotic dimension to the property’s birdlife, and the presence of Peacocks, Guinea Fowl, and Emus adds the kind of unexpected visual detail that makes guests pause and pull out their phones. The centuries-old Maroela trees (from which Maroela Weg takes its name) create natural archways and shaded gathering spaces throughout the grounds — living architecture that no interior designer can replicate.
One night at Pure Joy, a guest described it simply: a “beautiful and tranquil venue where the Blue Crane, birds and small game wander freely” — an experience so different from the surrounding urban environment that it genuinely delivers on the promise of escape without requiring a long journey.
Accommodation: 65 En-Suite Lodge Rooms and a Two-Storey House
Pure Joy offers overnight accommodation for groups of up to 120 guests across two accommodation formats:
65 En-Suite Lodge Rooms — the main accommodation building, with all rooms offering direct access and splendid views of the indigenous gardens. Each room is fully equipped with:
- Coffee and tea making facilities
- Selected DStv channels (M-Net, Movie Magic, Sports, SABC 1/2/3, e-tv)
- Flat-screen television
- Ceiling fans
- Wall-mounted heaters
- Private en-suite bathroom
The rooms have all the practical amenities needed for both corporate guests on multi-day conference packages and leisure visitors enjoying a bush getaway. A buffet breakfast is served daily. Free Wi-Fi and on-site parking are provided. The property is non-smoking.
The Two-Storey House — a beautiful seven-bedroom house on the premises, equipped with a lounge, dining room, boardroom (for up to 12 delegates or conference breakaway sessions), and kitchen with coffee and tea facilities and a fridge. The house sleeps 7 guests in single occupancy or 13 sharing (school groups can sleep 18 sharing), making it ideal for the wedding couple and immediate family, or a small executive group staying as one private unit.
Rates start from approximately R1,980 per night for two guests, with check-in from 14:00 and check-out by 10:00.
Conferences and Functions: Up to 200 Delegates
Pure Joy’s conference offering is one of the key commercial pillars of the lodge, with capacity for up to 200 delegates for day conferences, functions, and weddings. The combination of outdoor bush setting, boma, lapa, swimming pool, and formal conference infrastructure makes it particularly well suited to residential corporate retreats, team-building events, and year-end functions where the shift from the city environment is itself part of the value.
Multiple conference room configurations are available, including the dedicated boardroom in the two-storey house (12 delegates), the main conference and functions spaces for larger groups, and the breakaway options that the multi-building property naturally provides.
The venue is 15 minutes from central Pretoria and close to the N4, making it accessible for Pretoria, Centurion, and Midrand-based corporate clients who need a complete day or overnight retreat without leaving Gauteng.
The Traditional Boma: Up to 80 Guests
The traditional boma at Pure Joy accommodates up to 80 guests — an authentic open-air circular gathering space with a central fire, ideal for gala dinners, team-building events, year-end functions, and wedding after-parties. The boma format — around a fire, under a sky unobscured by urban light pollution, with the sounds of the African bush — provides the kind of evening experience that conference venues without an outdoor setting simply cannot match.
The Modern Lapa: Up to 50 Guests
The modern lapa accommodates up to 50 guests as a more sheltered outdoor function space — covered, well-lit, and suited to smaller dining events, cocktail sessions, and breakaway meals during longer conferences.
Swimming Pool and Outdoor Activities
A swimming pool provides a cooling option for guests during the warm Highveld summer months, and the lodge’s broad open grounds give conference groups and wedding parties space to breathe, walk, birdwatch, and interact with the free-roaming wildlife. Day tours to Pretoria and Johannesburg CBDs, historical sights, tourist attractions, Sun City, and cultural villages can be arranged from the lodge.
Weddings: Maroela Trees, Indigenous Gardens, and Bush Authenticity
For wedding couples, Pure Joy Guest Lodge offers a ceremony and reception setting rooted in the African bush environment. The venue’s indigenous gardens, ancient Maroela trees creating natural archways, seasonal wildflowers, and game farm backdrop combine to create the canvas for an authentic South African wedding where the surroundings themselves tell a story. The catering team crafts South African-inspired menus — featuring bobotie, malva pudding, and signature braai specialities — alongside customisable options. The boma provides the fire-lit setting for post-ceremony celebrations.
