Profile
DJC Durban — officially The DJC and historically known as the Durban Jewish Club — is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most storied and versatile event venues: a beautiful, historic art deco landmark at 44 KE Masinga Road, North Beach, less than 200 metres from Durban’s North Beach, that opened its doors on 4 May 1931 and has spent more than 90 years as a community and events hub at the heart of Durban’s social and cultural life. With 7 distinct event spaces spanning 13,014 sq ft of total meeting and function area, a seating capacity of 500, a coiled spring dance floor that is one of only two in Durban, original art deco glass mosaics and ceilings, fully licensed bar, ample parking for 200 vehicles, and a generator ensuring load-shedding-free events, DJC is a venue that few Durban establishments can match for either character or practical capability. It is described as “The Heart of Durban” — a self-designation that its 90-year community history fully justifies.
The History: Founded in 1931, Born of Necessity
The DJC’s founding story is rooted in one of the less celebrated chapters of South African social history. The venue was established by members of Durban’s Jewish community after Jewish residents were barred from joining the city’s existing sports clubs — a founding act of community self-determination that produced one of Durban’s most enduring institutions. The building opened on 4 May 1931 as a sports and recreational facility and quickly became a gathering point not just for the Jewish community but for the broader Durban public.
Over the decades, the DJC’s two large halls — the Main Hall and the Minor Hall — have hosted theatre productions, banquets, weddings, examination venues, concerts, dances, community events, and every other format that Durban’s social life has required. The original art deco design has been preserved through renovations, with the building’s distinctive glass mosaics, ceilings, and grand staircase remaining intact as tangible connections to the 1930s era in which the venue was born.
The Seven Spaces: From 500-Guest Banquets to Boardroom Meetings
DJC’s Cvent listing confirms 7 meeting rooms and 13,014 sq ft of total meeting space — making it one of the most comprehensively multi-space event facilities in the Durban CBD area. The main spaces are:
The Main Hall — the flagship space, seating up to 500 guests and spanning 4,478 sq ft (the largest single room). The Main Hall is newly renovated but retains its original art deco glass mosaics and ceiling in a balance of historical preservation and contemporary function. It has separate entrances for passage and side parking. For the last 90 years it has hosted theatre productions, banquets, weddings, and examination venues. Its defining feature is the coiled spring floor — literally designed for dancing, and one of only two such floors in Durban. The second-largest room on the property covers 2,659 sq ft.
The Minor Hall — ideal for smaller conferences and intimate weddings. It has a separate foyer and entrance, and includes direct access to the back garden — providing the option of a gazebo wedding ceremony in an outdoor garden setting.
The Lounge — an elegant, carpeted space with panoramic windows, suited to small and personal gatherings including intimate weddings, baby showers, and cocktail parties.
The Conference Room — a rectangular room specifically designed for conferences and large board meetings, equipped with a large-screen TV.
Two Boardrooms — available for rental, suited to executive meetings, small training sessions, and private briefings. The Lounge and Conference Room are inter-leading and can be combined for a single function.
The Foyer — the grand staircase leads into a large, welcoming foyer that serves as the natural welcome area for functions held in the Main Hall. It can be configured as a reception or cocktail space before guests move into the Main Hall for the main event.
The Sett — shared office space on the premises, available for daily or regular use by freelancers and small businesses.
The Coiled Spring Dance Floor: One of Only Two in Durban
The DJC’s most architecturally distinctive feature is its coiled spring floor in the Main Hall — a floor system that absorbs the kinetic energy of dancing and returns it to the dancer, creating a uniquely responsive surface that both professional dancers and wedding guests immediately feel underfoot. The DJC notes with deserved pride: “It is literally designed for dancing!!” Only one other venue in Durban is known to have this type of floor.

The Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre and Circle Café
The DJC building at 44 KE Masinga Road is also home to the Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre — a museum and educational institution that occupies part of the complex. Adjacent to the centre is Circle Café, a popular café set in the Garden of Remembrance, known for what regular visitors describe as “the best cheesecake in Durban,” homemade treats, traditional recipes passed down through generations, Euro Caffé Roasted Coffee beans (medium roast, smooth and nutty), and a jungle gym for children. The café is open to the public and adds a warm, community character to the broader DJC complex.
