Profile
De Vette Mossel Grootbrak is one of South Africa’s most extraordinary and beloved dining experiences — the original De Vette Mossel, established in 2004 by founder Niël du Bois on an isolated and pristine beach at Souwesia Beach, Great Brak River, between Kleinbrakrivier and Grootbrakrivier near Mossel Bay on the Garden Route. More than a restaurant, De Vette Mossel Grootbrak (“The Fat Mussel”) is a genuine South African seafood feast experience — a West Coast tradition transplanted to one of the Garden Route’s most beautiful stretches of coastline, where guests kick off their shoes, breathe in the ocean air, and settle in for 2 to 3 hours of rolling buffet-style seafood abundance in a completely relaxed, family-friendly beach setting.
With a capacity of up to 600 guests, 7 courses and 13 dishes served in succession — each available in unlimited quantities — a dedicated children’s play area with a zipline, barefoot beach weddings on the sand or on the wedding deck, and a 92% Facebook recommendation rate from over 1,400 reviews, De Vette Mossel Grootbrak has earned its reputation as one of the most memorable and uniquely South African dining experiences on the Garden Route.
The Experience — “Eat as Much as You Like — or Can!”
De Vette Mossel Grootbrak’s philosophy is rooted in the West Coast tradition of seafood abundance and social eating — “the only way to really enjoy seafood is in abundance, sand under your feet, the smell of the ocean in your nostrils — right next to the sea.”
Forget the formal à la carte experience. At De Vette Mossel Grootbrak, food arrives in a rolling procession — 7 courses, 13 dishes, prepared on open fires directly in front of guests, served one after another in unlimited quantities. As founder Niël du Bois explains with a smile: “We will never run out of anything — the worst that can happen is that more is on the way!”
The feast lasts 2 to 3 hours — time enough for relaxed conversation, barefoot walks between courses, children playing on the beach, and the kind of slow, joyful eating that only the open air and ocean atmosphere can produce. The entire experience is informal and convivial — no crystal glasses, no silver cutlery. You are on the beach. This is Africa. This is how we do it along the West Coast.
