Profile
Pietermaritzburg Showgrounds is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most historically significant and versatile large-scale event destinations — a landmark venue at 1 Howick Road, Wembley, Pietermaritzburg, with a heritage stretching back to 1851 and a legacy as the home of the annual Royal Agricultural Show, once described as “the largest exhibition of its kind in Africa”. Now managed by the uMgungundlovu Economic Development Agency (Umeda) and owned by Ducatus Property Group, the venue — now operating as the Umeda Showgrounds — is undergoing an exciting transformation, entering a bold new chapter as Pietermaritzburg’s premier multi-purpose events, exhibitions, and motorsport destination while preserving the iconic grounds that have defined the city’s cultural and economic calendar for more than 170 years.
With the Olympia Hall (seating 3,000), 13 exhibition halls, 350 trade stands, a main arena with grandstand seating and floodlighting, permanent secure infrastructure, and vast outdoor grounds — Pietermaritzburg Showgrounds remains the largest and most capable event venue in the Midlands region of KwaZulu-Natal.
A Legacy Since 1851 — KwaZulu-Natal’s Most Historic Show Venue
The Royal Agricultural Show originated in 1851 — decades before the Anglo-Boer War — and grew steadily alongside the development of KwaZulu-Natal’s agricultural, industrial, and commercial sectors. At the height of its annual Royal Show, the grounds hosted hundreds of craft and home industry exhibitions, stalls, livestock competitions, bird shows, agricultural produce competitions, and entertainment across 13 different exhibition halls and 350 trade stands — drawing visitors from across South Africa and beyond.
In its prime, the Royal Show featured concerts, fireworks displays, vintage tractor displays, and show-jumping across multiple days — a true festival of agricultural, commercial, and family entertainment that drew tens of thousands of visitors to Pietermaritzburg each year. At that scale, cattle, sheep, horses, and pigs had once been paraded along Commercial Street to the showgrounds — a procession that was as much a community tradition as it was a commercial event.
The outdoor stands hosted exhibits ranging from building materials and swimming pools to the latest ranges of cars and trucks, materials handling, and building equipment — making the Royal Show a comprehensive showcase of every industrial, commercial, and service sector in the province.
The Umeda Chapter — A New Era of Events
Under the management of Umeda (uMgungundlovu Economic Development Agency) and the ownership of Ducatus Property Group, the Pietermaritzburg Showgrounds is being revitalised as a vibrant economic engine room for the city of Pietermaritzburg and the broader uMgungundlovu district.
Director Rochelle Naicker describes the venue’s mission: “These are iconic grounds in Pietermaritzburg. We are committed to maintaining the venue’s integrity and legacy.” The new direction focuses on:
