What Is Le Petit Chef?
Le Petit Chef is the brainchild of Belgian artists Filip Sterckx and Antoon Verbeeck — two creative visionaries who invented the concept of 3D tabletop projection mapping as a dining format, creating what has become one of the world’s most viral and sought-after immersive dining experiences.
The premise is delightfully simple and utterly magical: the world’s smallest chef — a tiny animated character — appears to cook directly on your plate and across your table in real time, using state-of-the-art 3D optical illusion animation techniques projected from above. As Le Petit Chef travels across the world’s great culinary regions, each chapter of the story unlocks a new course — the food that arrives on your plate is the dish Le Petit Chef has just “cooked” for you, right before your eyes.
The mood, music, table patterns, props, and decoration all change with each chapter of the story, promising to immerse you in “the most eye-catching meal you will ever see — guaranteed.”
The Shows
Dinner Time Stories SA has brought multiple Le Petit Chef productions to South African audiences:
In the Footsteps of Marco Polo
The signature Le Petit Chef production — following the legendary traveller Marco Polo along the Silk Route from Europe through the Middle East, India, and China. Each course represents the cuisine of a country visited along the route.
How to Become the World’s Greatest Chef
A later production following Le Petit Chef through different eras and culinary traditions, combining visual artistry, theatrical storytelling, and fresh ingredients in a spectacular 6-course journey.
Each show features:
- Duration: 2.5 hours
- Courses: 6 to 7 courses, matched to each chapter of the story
- Technology: State-of-the-art 3D tabletop projection mapping using 4K animation
- Wine pairing option: Available — previous pairings have featured Old Road Wine Co wines from Franschhoek and Boschendal’s Bubbles
- Storybook: A printed storybook is placed before each guest — when opened, the journey begins on the page and across the table
- Arrival: Guests must arrive 30 minutes before the show begins for check-in
- Dietary requirements: Dietary accommodations available on request
